What's THAT??

I often find myself stumbling when trying to explain an Interdisciplinary degree. The conversation generally goes something like this...
Friend or family member asks, "What degree are you seeking?"
Me: "An Interdisciplinary degree."
(Friend gives look of confusion).
Friend: What is that?
Me: Well, it is similar to the old Liberal Arts degree, but it combines several disciplines. (bad answer)
Friend: Oh...

My discussion topic for this week is, how can we better describe an Interdisciplinary degree? What are some better analogies or examples we can use to help others understand our not so tradition program?

Please post early enough in the week so that we can all have a chance to respond.

As always...
Cheers,
Shelley :)

  1. I guess if you were to describe the IDS program to someone who had absolutely no clue, you might compare it to a Recipe...using many different ingredients to make one great dish. Although I am not a teacher, I think Education would be an area that uses many disciplines to make a good teacher. An outstanding teacher would be one who has not only the academic skills but also has some psychology background to not only survive the education field but hopefully enjoy his/her students because they have the insight to know how to better handle today's youth.
