Challenge

Hi there.  I've been so late with all of this, so please forgive me.  I've had a really hard time keeping up with this portion of the class and it's not like me to normally be that way, but I suppose I am just spread very thin right now, time wise.

I would say that my biggest challenge in working towards my degree has been being a single parent and going to school.  I live alone with my daughter and really have no help.  So, everything falls on my shoulders and while I consider myself fairly decent with time management, there are moments when there just simply are not enough hours in the week.  My brain gets cluttered with needing to do this, do that, and every other thing.  Trying to find time to study and still have time for my daughter is really difficult, especially now that she is 6 and she wants to get out and do things on the weekends (which is when I do most of my studying).  At this point, I am going to school every other semester so that I can make more time for her.
It's made finishing very difficult at times, due to the fact that between working full time and trying to get an education while being a single parent is exhausting.  However, I know that in the end, it will all have been worth it and I will be setting a good example for her to follow.

  1. I addressed it in my blog post but I want to say it again here, awesome job! It is a very noble thing your doing to set a good example for your daughter. I can only imagine how difficult it must be to have so much responsibility outside of school, and trying to finish with good grades. I barely know you but have a large amount of admiration for you. One of my best qualities I have taken from my dad is his incredibly hard work ethic and I think its one of my favorite qualities about myself. Im betting that one day your daughter will be feeling the same way I do.

  2. Alanna,

John is absolutely right! Your dedication to hard work and education will greatly impact your daughter. While she is very young right now and may not understand why you are NOT paying attention to her as much as she would like, one day she WILL understand. You are doing an awesome job, and I encourage you to stay the course. If you have to take courses every other semester, or even one at the time, keep going. The fact is, time WILL pass whether you are working on your education or not. Life WILL be busy whether you are in school or not. Hang in there, take one small bite at a time and you will achieve your goals. Congratulations on what you have already accomplished!!

    You Rock!

  3. Hi Alanna,
Congratulations on your graduation this semester. Perseverance is the key. Even though it took you six years you did not give up and accomplished your goal. I also think flexibility within the curriculum of an IDS degree was a key factor in my decision for choosing this degree. I wish the best on your new journey after graduation. I am considering taking some courses on Legal Studies as well.
