Challenge

I would say my biggest challenge in my education came many years ago when I was thinking of changing schools. I was attending UCF at the time and had decided to transfer to FSU. I had a few friends attending that university and it had a good special education program which is where my interest was at the time. The very same day I received my acceptance into the school, my father received a transfer to Colorado. My parents did give my the choice of going out west with them or staying in Florida at Tallahassee. I had been away for the past 2 summers as a camp counselor and did have a touch of homesickness. Since I had never been out west and did not know when I would ever get another chance, I decided to head west. I was able to adjust to this dramatic change by changing direction in my education and attended a local community college where I received my Associate in Medical Assisting, found a good job, married and eventually moved back to Orlando.

  1. Kay,

Are you glad you decided to make the journey west? Would you do anything differently if the had the chance? I know I have made a few decisions along those lines that I wish I could change. For one, I wish I had applied myself at a little when I was a college freshmen (18 years ago).

  2. Shelley,
I am certainly glad I did head west, it was a great adventure for 2 1/2 years. The only thing I would have done different is to have completed a four year degree instead of an Associate but at the time it was the way to earn a living right after marriage and many years later I am getting back to what I started, guess it's never too late.

  3. I think things happen for a reason. You wouldn't be who you are and where you are today had you not taken that risk. Sometimes we wonder at the time if we're doing the right thing, but your instincts seemed to work in your favor. I wish I hadn't waited so long to go to college, but at the same time, I do think I appreciate it more because I am older and understand the magnitude of what I'm trying to accomplish. Is your family still out west? What made you want to return to Orlando?

  4. Alanna,
    The rest of my story:
My husband followed me out west, he was born and raised in Orlando, we've known each other since high school, (which for me was a long time ago)! So we wanted to come back here and my folks had transferred to AZ, TX and back to Orlando too. So we are all back in town..
I do hope you can finish your education, you seem determined to do so and that is what it takes. I know having a daughter to take care of is the best incentive.
